Goiter: A swelling in the neck

đź“šA goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland resulting in a “swollen neck” and it may be diffuse or nodular.

🏩Goiters are found in people with:
1️⃣Iodine deficiency
2️⃣Autoimmune thyroiditis - Hashimoto or postpartum thyroiditis
3️⃣Excess iodine (Wolff-Chaikoff effect) or lithium ingestion, which decrease release of thyroid hormone
4️⃣Goitrogens
5️⃣Thyroid malignancy etc

đź’‰Surgery is reserved for
Large goiters with compression, Malignancy, and when other forms of therapy are not practical or ineffective.

đź’ŠMedications used include B-blockers, methimazole and propylthiouracil.
