Lucinda Allen, 38, from Stourbridge in the West Midlands was 6 months pregnant when she had intercourse with her husband Tony. After climaxing twice, she experienced a sharp pain just above her right eye.

She said, 'My pregnancy had been overshadowed by gestational diabetes, which I was managing through diet and exercise. I checked my blood pressure most days. On this particular Saturday morning, I checked my blood pressure
- which was low - so decided to get back into bed with my husband.'
.
After having sex Lucinda experienced the painful headache but thought nothing of it as she regularly had a short burst of head-pain immediately after she'd climaxing.
.
.
Scans later showed that she had suffered a brain haemorrhage and was put into an induced coma to let her brain rest: during that time, she had brain surgery – a craniotomy to release the pressure on her brain where the blood had leaked out. Lucinda was left paralysed down her left side and is now a full time wheelchair user with a healthy four year old girl.

Dr. Olanisun Olufemi Adewole invents Sweat TB Test

Nigerian doctor, Dr. Olanisun Olufemi Adewole has invented a a non-invasive, rapid diagnostic test to detect tuberculosis. The invention, called Sweat TB Test, leverages a TB specific marker in the sweat of patients, to produce a point-of-care test to detect TB, within 10 minutes, without any needle prick. The tests also allows quick generation of reports so that patients can commence on medication as needed in the same clinic visit.
.
Currently, tuberculosis diagnosis is notoriously invasive, dependent only on sputum which sometimes may not be collectible and considered messy by patients. As well as being time consuming, patients having to make repeated clinic visits before a diagnosis is made, leading to a delay in diagnosis and even missed diagnosis of over three million TB cases and eventually, continuous spread of the disease.

Canadian baby without a gender

Canadian baby Searlyn Atli may be the first baby in the world without an 'assigned' gender on their health card. According to BBC, the baby's parent, Kori Doty, a non-binary transgender person who identifies as neither male nor female aims to allow the child to discover their own gender.

If you're wondering, there is a "U" in place of the usual 'M' or 'F' [for male or female] that represents "undetermined" or "unassigned".

Justice for family of "racist" syphilis study

For 40 years starting in 1932, medical workers in the segregated South withheld treatment for unsuspecting men infected with a sexually transmitted disease simply so doctors could track the ravages of the horrid illness and dissect their bodies afterward.
.

The men were persuaded to participate by promises of:
free transportation to and from hospitals,
free hot lunches,
free medical treatment for ailments other than syphilis and
a free burial
.

Video: Syphilis

Syphilis is a chronic bacterial disease that can be contracted by other means but is typically a sexually-transmitted disease.
In very rare cases, it can be spread through prolonged kissing, as well as the more common routes of transmission: vaginal, anal and oral sex. It comes from the bacteria Treponema pallidum.
.
The infection develops in stages:
.
STAGE ONE
Small, painless sores (like ulcers) on genitals or in the mouth
Appear within 10-90 days after exposure
They disappear within six weeks, and do not leave a scar, before developing to stage two
.
STAGE TWO
Rosy rash on the palms of the hand and soles of the feet
Moist warts in the groin White patches inside the mouth
Swollen glands
Fever
Weight loss
This all fades away without treatment before developing into stage three

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental illness characterized by by periods of deep, prolonged, and profound depression that alternate with periods of an excessively elevated or irritable mood known as mania.
.
There are two types: Bipolar I and Bipolar II.
.
A person affected by bipolar I disorder has had at least one manic episode in his or her life. Often, there is a pattern of cycling between mania and depression. This is where the term "manic depression" comes from.
.
Patients with bipolar II disorder present with one or more episodes of major depression with at least one hypomanic episode.
.
Diagnostically, mania must be at least seven days whereas hypomania has to be at least 4 days. Also, if “the episode is not severe enough to cause marked impairment in functioning, or to necessitate hospitalization, and there are no psychotic features, it is termed hypomania.
.
However, it is important to note that once a patient exhibits "complete" mania, they have BPD I.
.
Mood stabilisers (Lithium), Anticonvulsants (valproate, carbamazepine, lamotrigine) and antipsychotics such as risperidone, quetiapine are  used in treatment of BPD. Most patients continue this treatment for life to avoid a relapse.
.
N.B: SSRIs, SNRIs are not usually used even when the patient is in a depressed state because it could tilt the patient to mania.
