The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has announced plans by the Sultanate Council to set up an all-female university for medicine in Sokoto.

The initiative, according to the monarch was to provide more opportunities for the girl-child to pursue a medical career.

Sultan Abubakar disclosed this when he addressed some top government officials during a lecture delivered at the Wilson Centre, Washington DC. United States.

The Sultan, according to a statement signed by the Kogu-nan Sokoto, Malam Danladi Bako, said that there was no law in Islam or in the Nigerian constitution that bars the girl-child from getting western education.

"Islam instructs its followers to search for education even as far as China, as such, it is not against western education" Sultan explained, according to the statement.
