Dr Taiwo Shogunle, 53 and Dr. Adeleke Olusegun, 43 of St. Raphael Divine Mercy Specialist Hospital at Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos State, PMNews reports, have been arrested by operatives of the Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos and arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos on a one count charge of felony, to wit, murder.
They allegedly caused the death of their patient, Omojola Bamgboye after negligently forgetting an abdominal mop (towel) inside the patient.
Police prosecutor, Supol Eshiet Eshiet told the court in charge No L/28/2016 that the accused persons committed the offence between 18 and 19 December, 2015 at St. Raphael Divine Mercy Specialist Hospital, Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos.
Eshiet told the court presided by Magistrate A.T. Omoyele that the doctors unlawfully killed the man during surgical operation by negligently abandoning a foreign body, towel, in his abdomen.
He said the offence the offence is punishable under section 222(2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused persons denied the allegations in court and the magistrate admitted them to bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
Omoyele directed the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and forward it to the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP, for advice. The case has been adjourned till September 9, 2016.
..........I feel the theatre nurse should also share in the blame, seeing it's part of their responsibility to count the surgical equipment before and after an operation to avoid situations like this.
