πŸ“šπŸ“šRhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves reshaping the nose. It has two main components to it.
πŸ‘‰πŸ½First the cosmetic component: reshaping the nose to meet your personal goals.

πŸ‘‰πŸ½The second part of a rhinoplasty is the functional part of the operation. This involves improving the airway and the ability to breathe easily and efficiently through the nose.

πŸ“šNasal packing is the application of sterile tampons to the nasal chambers.
πŸ‘‰πŸ½The most common purpose of nasal packing is to control bleeding and provide support to the septum following surgery and nasal reconstruction. It is also used to treat chronic nosebleeds.

πŸ‘‰πŸ½As both nostrils are packed, the nasal cavity is completely blocked, preventing the patient breathing through their nose. Therefore, the patient must adjust to breathing through the mouth.
πŸ‘‰πŸ½Nasal packs are usually removed within 24-48 hours post-op, or when the doctor states.

A very Rare medical condition!!

Cystic hydatid disease is endemic in livestock-raising countries and results from infection with the larval or adult form of the Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm.
The most common sites of hydatid cysts are the liver (in 50%–70% of cases), lungs (5%–30%), muscles (5%), bones (3%), kidneys (2%), spleen (1%), and brain (1%). Cardiac involvement is seen only in 0.5% to 2% of patients with hydatid disease.

A very brilliant IMPOSTER!!!

Ferdinand Waldo Demara, Jr. (December 21, 1921 – June 7, 1982) was known as 'The Great Impostor.
While at the Brothers of Christian Instruction, he became acquainted with a young doctor named Joseph C. Cyr. This led to his most famous exploit, working as a trauma surgeon aboard HMCS Cayuga, a Royal Canadian Navy destroyer, during the Korean War.
Aboard the ship, he managed to improvise successful major surgeries and fend off infection with generous amounts of penicillin. His most notable surgical practices were performed on some sixteen Korean combat casualties who were loaded onto the Cayuga. All eyes turned to Demara, the only "surgeon" on board.

Kidnapped doctor rescued, 4 kidnappers dead

Four suspected members of a kidnapping gang that whisked away a medical doctor last week at St. François Hospital in Onikan, Lagos, have been killed.

They were gunned down inside the Ibeju-Lekki forest on Friday during an operation carried out by the police to rescue the man identified as Dr. Ajayi.

Woman With Four legs

The woman in the picture is Ashley Braistle and she was born with more than 4 limbs: a condition known as POLYMELIA.

Another person in history with a similar condition was Myrtle Corbin.

Myrtle Corbin, was known as the four legged woman - However, that Moniker was slightly misleading. While at a glance one could see four legs dangling beyond the hem of her dress only one pair actually belonged to her.

“There is no indication that there was an external perpetrator, the firearm used to commit the crime had been confiscated,’’ Hartwig said.

Clarification has yet to be made, however, over an earlier statement that both men had been shot several times.

Broken-Heart Syndrome Is NOT A Myth!!!

Did you know a broken heart can actually kill you😳😳? . Yes it is true. πŸ“šπŸ“šThe condition is known as Takotsubo or Stress cardiomyopathy.

It causes a weakening of the left ventricle, usually as the result of severe emotional or physical stress, such as a sudden illness, the loss of a loved one, a serious accident, or a natural disaster such as an earthquake. That's why the condition is also called stress-induced cardiomyopathy, or BROKEN-HEART syndrome. The main symptoms are chest pain and shortness of breath.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) mimics acute coronary syndrome and no initial ECG finding reliably differentiates TCM from STEMI.

If the patient continues to manifest a clinical picture consistent with acute coronary syndrome, especially STEMI, then standard therapies, such as the following, may be indicated:
  •  Aspirin
  •  Beta blockers
  •  Nitrates
  • Heparin or enoxaparin
  • Platelet glycogen (GP) IIb/IIIa inhibitors
  • Morphine
  • Clopidogrel .

Now you know dying from a broken heart is not just a myth 😁😁. .

Doctors will have to start machine learning- Gundotra

When Vic Gundotra left Google in 2014, he thought he might retire, forever. But a lingering interest in wearable technology and machine learning led him to AliveCor, which lets users monitor their heart health from their smartphones.
“No human doctor can look at your EKG and tell you with a high degree of accuracy what your potassium level is,” Gundotra said. “But the machines might be able to do something.”
Although he believes artificial intelligence will take some jobs away over time, Gundotra said people will always want human doctors “to tell them what’s going on.” He envisioned a near future where those doctors routinely enlist machines’ help and developing a good bedside manner becomes more important than ever.

Japan Creates Barcodes For Dementia Patients

A Japanese city has introduced a novel way to keep track of senior citizens with dementia who are prone to getting lost -- tagging their fingers and toes with scan-able barcodes.
A company in Iruma, north of Tokyo, developed tiny nail stickers, each of which carries a unique identity number to help concerned families find missing loved ones, according to the city's social welfare office.
The adhesive QR-coded seals for nails -- part of a free service launched this month and a first in Japan -- measure just one centimetre in size.
If an elderly person becomes disoriented, police will find the local city hall, its telephone number and the wearer's ID all embedded in the QR code.

Video: Resection Of A Colon Polyp

πŸŽ₯Resection of a colonic polyp during a colonoscopy.

Colonic polyps are slow-growing overgrowths of the colonic mucosa that carry a small risk (<1%) of becoming malignant. Therefore, they are removed whenever detected.

The best test test for detecting a colonic polyp is a colonoscopy; which is also useful in obtaining biopsies, and/or performing endoscopic resection.

Although flexible sigmoidoscopy and stool tests for occult blood have been the mainstays of screening to prevent colon cancer, some clinicians now favor colonoscopy as a primary screening tool.

πŸ“šπŸ“šIntestinal polyposis syndromes can be divided, based on histology, into the broad categories of:
πŸ‘‰πŸ½Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)
πŸ‘‰πŸ½Hamartomatous polyposis syndromes
πŸ‘‰πŸ½and other rare polyposis syndromes, such as hereditary-mixed polyposis syndrome (HMPS).

The picture shows 11 year old class five pupil Mamie Sam from Sierra-Leone who is currently battling an overgrowth of her breasts.
She said some time last year she went on a fishing expedition together with her grand mother and other women in the town. After the exercise she started experiencing her breasts becoming large. While taking a bath together with the elders in the stream one of the women spoke about her breast saying her breast is becoming abnormal and it is not a good thing for her.
During the night hour she said her breast scratched throughout the night giving her sleepless night and it’s kept projecting up to the current length as she continued to scratch.
She maintained that her parents have sought medical attention at Nixon Memorial hospital at Segbwema and several herbalists within the community but no improvement.
Her grand father Saidu Moriba said this is the first time he is seeing such wonder in his life time, and that they are baffled as what to do to save her from this trouble. He revealed that several prayers and sacrifices have been done on her behalf but the problem still remains and they are asking for assistance.

Fake Soldier Also Posed As A Doctor

Do you remember the fake soldier that was arrested last Friday in Abuja? It turns out she was also parading herself as a doctor.

The Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army has said the lady identified as Juliana Gumel operated an unregistered clinic at the Dutse area of Abuja. . A statement signed on behalf of the Guards Brigade by Major Abdulahi Abba stated that the 42-year old woman had been operating the illegal facility identified as El-Sone Clinic and Maternity located at Buki Village, Dutse, off the Bwari Expressway, Abuja since 2014.

Abba said that the fake major lived in a makeshift apartment as a doctor in the area. . He said that the house and the clinic of the impostor had been sealed off by the military as a crime scene, adding that the case would be handed over to the police at the end of the ongoing investigation.

Abba dismissed the claim that the woman was arrested along the Abuja Keffi Road with children strapped with bombs. . He gave her real name as JUMMAI ANN (surname withheld.) .

HIV statistics for Lagos

On Wednesday, Dr Oluseyi Temowo, the Chief Executive Officer, Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) revealed that at least 9, 579 people tested positive to HIV of the 616, 318 that attended the HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) awareness programme from January to June, 2016. . Temowo spoke at a news conference in Ikeja to mark the 2016 World AIDS Day with the theme: “Hands Up for #HIV Prevention’’.

Temowo said that in 2015, a total number of 599, 560 people were counselled, tested and received results out of which 15, 311 people were found to be positive. The LSACA chief said that 52, 803 people living with the scourge were currently on Antiretrovirals (ARVs).

“These statistics simply means that there are many more people who are not aware that they have the virus, that is why knowing one’s status is very important. “It is a common knowledge that an HIV positive person can be symptom free for 10 years and will continue to infect others, if not checked and treated. “Being HIV positive does not translate to death with appropriate medications,” he said. . "We implore residents to visit all government hospitals within their areas to access free HCT, while HCT trucks will move around to reach other areas for this purpose.

"We also advise people to ensure these various means of prevention- condom use, harm reduction, voluntary medical male circumcision, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, counselling and testing,” he said. .

"20 rupees" doctor buried, thousands of patients mourn

The streets of Sidhapudur near Gandhipuram in Coimbatore overflowed with people on Sunday morning, as thousands descended to pay their respects to the much-beloved “20-rupees doctor”.
Dr Balasubramaniam, who passed away from a cardiac arrest on Friday, earned the moniker of “20-rupees doctor” because that was the maximum fee he charged from any of his patients.
He first started off charging his patients just Rs 2 for a consultation, slowly increasing it over the years by small amounts. Even until two years ago, he only asked his patients for a fee of Rs 10.
These fees were charged from patients only if the doctor gave them an injection or medicines, says Bhoopathy , a patient who had been visiting him for 10 years. “We would spend perhaps Rs 30 on medicines, give the doctor Rs 20. We never spent more than Rs 50. And we were always cured of our ailments. If we went back to him again, he wouldn’t take more money from us.”
“God has given me sufficient money to take care of myself. I am helping the sick and the weak recover their health. Let God do the rest of the work,” Dr Balasubramaniam had told CovaiPost last year.

Siamese Twins Delivery

Siamese twinning occurs when the inner cell mass derived from a single zygote divides 12 days or more after fertilization.
Conjoined twins are typically classified by the point at which their bodies are joined. The common forms are:
1. Thoraco-omphalopagus: Two bodies fused from the upper chest to the lower chest. These twins usually share a heart, and may also share the liver or part of the digestive system.
2. Thoracopagus: Two bodies fused from the upper thorax to lower belly. The heart is always involved in these cases. As of 2015, separation of a genuinely shared heart has not offered survival to two twins; a designated twin may survive if allotted the heart, sacrificing the other twin.
3. Omphalopagus: Two bodies fused at the lower abdomen. Unlike thoracopagus, the heart is never involved in these cases; however, the twins often share a liver, digestive system, diaphragm and other organs.
4. Parasitic twins: Twins that are asymmetrically conjoined, resulting in one twin that is small, less formed, and dependent on the larger twin for survival.
5. Craniopagus: Fused skulls, but separate bodies. These twins can be conjoined at the back of the head, the front of the head, or the side of the head, but not on the face or the base of the skull.

Fart Causes Fire In The Theatre

A patient who farted during a surgical procedure in Tokyo, Japan allegedly sparked a fire that seriously burned her, according to a hospital report.😱😱
The unnamed woman, in her 30s, was undergoing an operation in April at Tokyo Medical University Hospital that involved applying a laser to her cervix, when the laser ignited.
The blaze burned much of her body, including her waist and legs, according to a hospital report released on October 28.
The committee charged with investigating the incident ruled that there were no flammable materials nearby at the time of the surgery and that the equipment was operating normally, leading them to conclude that the women's flatulence was the cause.
"When the patient's intestinal gas leaked into the space of the operation (room), it ignited with the irradiation of the laser," the report states, "and the burning spread, eventually reaching the surgical drape and causing the fire."😲😲
