Why cancer is rising in Nigeria –Radiographers’ Board

The Registrar of the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN), Sunday Opaleke, has attributed the increase in cases of cancer in Nigeria to wrong diagnoses often carried out by quacks.

Opaleke said this in Abuja during a leadership retreat organised for zonal heads of RRBN in collaboration with Blueace Management Consultants.

As part of moves to check activities of quacks in the sector, the registrar hinted that the board had constituted a committee to review the database of all radiographers and radiography centres across the country.

He said, “We have a database of all radiographers and all the radiography centres across the country. Be that as may, we want to review the database to accommodate emerging trends. New centres are coming on stream daily. We are going to commission a committee that will handle that very soon."

On the effects of quackery in the sector, he added that quacks can expose patients to high doses of radiation and this exposure could increase the risk of developing cancer later.

Although I agree that exposure to radiation can cause cancer, I believe the increase in cancer cases in Nigeria is more likely due to our change in diet, with many of us consuming unhealthy processed meals with reduced fibre intake.

Do you agree?
