Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Health has commenced the distribution of free condoms to residents of Lagos Mainland Local Government Area and also held a motor rally to educate on issues of family planning and HIV/AIDs prevention as part of activities to commemorate the year 2015 World Female Condom Day.
According to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. ‘Modele Osunkiyesi “the World Female Condom day is set aside by the World Health Organization to encourage wider access to the female condom as a method of preventing both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
She said the State government under His Excellency Mr Akinwunmi Ambode as part of its HIV prevention and family planning programme provided female condoms for free adding that this is also part of the efforts to encourage wider access to female condom in the State.
The Permanent Secretary while highlighting the benefits of female condom stated that it provides an opportunity for women to share the responsibility for condoms use with their partners.
“A woman may be able to use the female condom if her partner refuses to use a male condom and a female condom can be inserted in advance of sexual intercourse”, she added.
To commemorate this global event, the Reproductive Health Unit of the Lagos State of the Lagos State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Association for Reproductive and Family Health (ARFH) conducted the motorized rally and gave out free female condoms in market places, major roads and streets in Lagos Mainland Local government and environs.
