Sofia Vergara, 42, popular for her role as Gloria in the show Modern Family is currently locked in a bitter battle with her ex Nick Loeb over her embryos.
Sofia and her then fiancé Nick had agreed to preserve her eggs for fertilization so they could have family together, because her cancer treatment made it difficult to have children.
The couple signed a contract that the embryos will only be used with the agreement of both parties but two of the embryos implanted in surrogates were unsuccessful.
The couple split in 2012 with 2 embryos yet to be implanted. In a cruel twist, Nick is now demanding the embryos be used in another surrogate against Sofia's wishes. He plans to raise the children with his new girlfriend.
With less than a day to the premiere of Sofia's new film, Hot Pursuit, Nick published an article in the New York Times aimed at smearing Sofia.
His argument seemed driven by a “right-to-life” belief. “When we create embryos for the purpose of life, should we not define them as life, rather than as property?” Loeb wrote.
The feminist website Jezebel wrote that Loeb is “petty as hell and obsessed with Vergara’s embryos to a degree that is legitimately terrifying”.
Considering that In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is more demanding for a woman (ovarian stimulation with injectables, egg monitoring, egg retrieval etc) than a man, one has to wonder if his motives are anything but vengeful especially as he's younger than Sofia with greater chances of procreation.
At the premiere of her movie, Sofia refused to comment on the issue.
