4 celebrity quotes on mental illness

If you're suffering from depression or any form of mental illness, it can be comforting to read the words of those who've been there and can relate to what you're going through. Even more so when those words come from someone you admire. Just like the rest of us, celebrities battle mental illness too and here are quotes from some of them.

  1. Beyonce

The singer said in the past that she went through a period of depression after Destiny's Child disbanded and her long-term relationship ended.

In an interview with Parade Magazine, she said,  "I didn't eat, I stayed in my room. I was in a really bad place in life, going through that lonely period: 'Who am I? Who are my friends?' My life changed."

"Now that I was famous, I was afraid I'd never find somebody again to love me for me. I was afraid of making new friends. Then one day my mom said, 'Why do you think a person wouldn't love you? Don't you know how smart, sweet and beautiful you are?' That's when I decided I only have two choices: I can give up, or I can go on."

    2. J.K. Rowling

“I have never been remotely ashamed of having been depressed. Never. What’s to be ashamed of? I went through a really rough time and I am quite proud that I got out of that.”

3. Lady Gaga

“I learned that my sadness never destroyed what was great about me. You just have to go back to that greatness, find that one little light that’s left. I’m lucky I found one little glimmer stored away.”

4. Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato is doing just fine after being diagnosed with mental illness. She is now an advocate for mental health.

She said, “It’s my mission to share this with the world and to let them know that there is life on the other side of those dark times that seem so hopeless and helpless. I want to show the world that there is life -- surprising, wonderful and unexpected life after diagnosis.”

If you are dealing with mental illness, bear in mind that you are not alone and like many others who have won the battle against mental illness, you too can make it through.

If you have or know anyone with mental illness, please endeavour to give them all the support you can.

Stay healthy and happy.
