Chinese Teen Mum Dumps Baby In Toilet During Break And Goes Back To Work

Xiao Xing, 17, was too afraid to tell her parents she was pregnant so she concealed the pregnancy till she was due. During a break at the shoe factory where she worked, she delivered a baby boy in the restroom and left him in one of the hole-in-the-ground toilets.

The baby was found by a cleaner which prompted a search for his mother. Initially Xiao denied being the mother until some blood was seen on her shoes. Thereafter, she admitted to being the mother.

In the hospital, the baby was found to be severely hypothermic with a temperature of 30.5 degrees  centigrades (86.9 Fahrenheit). His body temperature rose to a sub-optimal temperature of 35.8 degrees after some 6 hours of treatment. However, a doctor treating him said his initial low body temperature could affect his development in the future.

Ying’s father arrived to arrange her medical treatment, but said the family had no intention of keeping the baby and would ask the father’s family to step in.

‘My daughter isn’t married. We cannot keep this baby’, he said.

In under-resourced settings, hypothermia at birth is one of the most important risk factors for morbidity and mortality in newborn infants of all birth weights and gestational ages. Complications of neonatal hypothermia include: respiratory insufficiency/failure especially with rewarming, respiratory acidosis; bradycardia; cardiac arrhythmia; hypotension; micro-embolism etc.

Should you ever find yourself in the position to save a newborn, you can prevent hypothermia by drying the baby; removing any wet blankets; wrapping the infant in a pre-warmed blanket, as well as with skin to skin contact. Finally, ensure you take the baby to a hospital for further treatment.
