Woman Seeks Redress For The Removal Of Her Normal Ovary

A 20 year old woman, whose identity is being protected, had her normal, functioning ovary removed by a surgeon, who then "lied" that it was "destroyed" when she was only 15 years old. She was referred by her family doctor to the surgeon when she complained of left abdominal pain in the fall of 2009.

Her allegations against Parry Sound general surgeon Dr. George Hunt are contained in a complaint and appeal to the College and Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board.

At her first consultation with Dr. Hunt, she was told  she required "urgent surgery" and on Oct. 5 that year, he removed her left ovary. When she and her parents went for a follow-up appointment 10 days later, he told them the reproductive organ had to come out because it was “destroyed, full of blood and of no use.

Pathology results later showed that the ovary was normal with only a benign, naturally occurring cyst, which could spontaneously resolve.

The woman seeks a full public hearing but the HPARB is yet to rule on the case.
